KENNEBUNK — Maine had one of the nation’s highest voter turnout rates in 2024, with 74.6% of eligible voters casting ballots, compared with the national average of 65.3%, according to the Independent Voter Project.
Early voting in Kennebunk suggests strong turnout could continue this year, Town Clerk Merton Brown said.
Voting has been “robust” the first week, Brown said. “Opening day was very busy.”
The town has distributed 2,100 absentee ballots so far, including 700 issued in person. The remaining ballots were mailed Monday. Brown said some of the mailed ballots have already been returned, indicating that the post office is processing them.
Brown said voters appear well prepared for the election. They are showing up for early voting, and no one yet has seemed confused about ranked choice voting.
Brown reminded voters that this year, polling is taking place on the third floor of Town Hall, rather than the second floor.
How to Vote
Below is information for voters in Kennebunk, Kennebunkport and Arundel
Vote Early in Person: Ballots are available at all town clerks’ offices during office hours, and voters may drop by to request a ballot anytime without appointment. The ballot may be returned directly to the town clerk at any time, or can be dropped in the election drop box, which is also located at the town offices. Drop boxes are available 24/7. All ballots must be received by 8 p.m. on Election Day, Nov. 3.
Vote by Mail: Up until Oct. 19, voters can go to the Secretary of State’s website to request that a ballot be mailed to them; they can also call their town office and make that same request. The U.S. Postal Service is recommending mailing completed ballots back to the town office no later than Oct. 24. However, a ballot can also be placed in the voter’s town election drop box any time before 8 p.m. on Election Day, Nov. 3.
Vote in Person on Nov. 3: Polls are open 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 3 in all three communities.
Voter Registration: You may register to vote in the November election up to and including Election Day at your town office or, on Election Day, at your polling place. A valid form of identification is required, such as a driver’s license, state ID card, tribal ID card, U.S. passport, or voter ID cards issued by county registration offices.
