KENNEBUNK – The Brick Store Museum is celebrating 90 years of service to Southern Maine with its new special anniversary exhibition, Community Building: The Museum at 90. Founded in 1936 by American artist Edith Barry in an historic brick general store atop Kennebunk’s Main Street, the institution became the 15th museum to open in Maine, dedicated to preserving and celebrating local art and history.
The new exhibition takes visitors on a journey through the Museum’s early days and the changes it has witnessed over nearly a century. A highlight features a showcase of artifacts selected directly from the Museum’s 55,000-piece collection by staff, volunteers, and members. Interactive components bring the founding narrative directly to life. Visitors can sit at a replica of Edith Barry’s desk to read reproductions of handwritten planning documents that outline her decades-long effort to build a community landmark. Looking forward, guests are invited to share their vision and actively advise the Museum on its next chapter as it approaches its centennial in 2036.
To honor nine decades of service, the Museum is inviting donors and community supporters to participate in its new 90-for-90 Campaign. Supporters are asked to make a $90 contribution to the Spofford Education Fund, which fuels the Museum’s year-round educational programming for children and adults alike. Contributions directly support the Museum’s core mission to ignite personal connections to local history and art across Southern Maine. The Museum is thankful to be supported by individuals, businesses, and foundations. Not supported by any local, state or federal funding, the Museum raises 100% of its annual operating costs each year to provide free or reduced-cost educational programs and exhibitions for all.
The exhibition will remain on view at the Brick Store Museum at 117 Main Street in Kennebunk through December 2026. A special Members Reception is scheduled for Wednesday, September 30, from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM. Community members interested in donating to the Spofford Education Fund through the 90-for-90 Campaign can visit www.brickstoremuseum.org/donate or call 207-985-4802. In December, a special “Sparkling at 90” holiday event is planned.
