ARUNDEL – Traffic movement and safety at two intersections in Arundel are likely to be improved in the next year. The frequency of accidents at the intersection of Limerick Road and Alfred Road (Route 111) has spurred the Maine Department of Transportation to find a remedy for that troubled intersection. The other intersection, the Brimstone Road/Limerick Road junction, will be reconfigured to make it less awkward for traffic flow. Both of these projects are scheduled for this year and into the next.
MaineDOT has started the process to add a traffic light on Route 111. The plan includes a third turning lane from Route 111 onto Limerick Road for easier access. The light is scheduled to be installed in 2027 and is in the MaineDOT workplan for next year, meaning funding is secured. According to Wayne Parry, state representative for Arundel, this funding is federal since it is a safety issue “so the current problems with DOT funding shouldn’t affect this project,” he said.
The Brimstone/Limerick Road junction, adjacent to the Dutch Elm Golf Course, is in the final design phase, according to an email from Ben Byrne, public works director for Arundel. He will present the final design to the select board within the next month with the hope that construction would start in the late fall 2026 or early in the spring of 2027.
The startup of this project is dependent on the bridge replacement on Downing Road at the Kennebunk/Arundel town line. Byrne did not have a completion date for this project but said that it would take “hopefully only a couple of weeks depending on unforeseen site conditions and the movement of existing utilities.”
