As development continues in West Kennebunk and the landscape changes, a new plaque offers residents and visitors a reminder of the village’s history.
Installed in June near the West Kennebunk community kiosk, the “Welcome to West Kennebunk” sign recognizes the village’s contributions to local industry, business and culture, according to Jenn Root Martell, chair of the West Kennebunk Village Committee.
The project began two years ago when Daniel Guay, former West Kennebunk Village Committee chair, proposed the sign.
The sign features a map, historic photographs of significant buildings and farms, images of the northern blazing star wildflowers found on the Kennebunk Plains, and references for further historical research. It also highlights landmarks including the West Kennebunk rail line and depot, the Robert Lord Twine Mill and the Littlefield Bros. store.
“The project aligned with the committee’s mission to support the community, highlight its character and enhance public spaces,” Martell said. “It was also a tangible project that could educate residents and visitors about the history of this vibrant community.”
Kathy Ostrander Roberts, Kennebunk’s town historian, researched and compiled photographs illustrating life in West Kennebunk. After committee members and town staff reviewed and finalized the photographs and descriptions, Alpha Graphics printed the plaque last fall following a competitive bidding process.
The project was funded through tax revenue from the town’s tax increment financing program, which supports community improvements. Stephen Houdlette, Kennebunk’s director of economic vitality, and the town’s Economic Development Committee assisted with the effort.
Town Department of Public Services staff identified a location beside the existing West Kennebunk Village kiosk and installed it.
The committee plans to continue highlighting the village’s history with a presentation at the Dorothy E. Stevens Community Center on Thompson Road in spring 2027.
